September 2008 - A Year Later Looking Back - Looking Forward

Dear Customer,
One year ago our country and particularly our financial system entered its greatest economic crisis since the 1930s.  While we appear to be emerging from the worst of a near-meltdown of our financial system, it’s been a very rocky ride and all of us, including Litchfield Bancorp, have faced unparalleled challenges.  I am happy to report that our bank, your bank, remained well-capitalized, conservatively managed and profitable throughout this period.  We never made any subprime or infamous Alt-A mortgage loans and have followed a steady path that recognizes that customer relationships are far more important than individual transactions.  We have and will continue to conduct ourselves ethically and responsibly.

Community banks like ours and Northwest Community Bank in Winsted, our partner in Connecticut Mutual Holding Company, have been a source of great strength to the communities we serve.  With our partner we’ve continued to make consumer and small business loans throughout the crisis.  As partners we are a stronger resource for Litchfield County and can make larger loans and serve more customers better than we ever could individually.

Our bank has been and continues to be challenged by competitors receiving so-called TARP support from the federal government, by greatly increased FDIC insurance assessments that will increase operating costs by more than $440,000   in 2009 alone, by the local economy, which has its own problems, and by myriad other factors. We remain strong, resilient, and optimistic about our future and our ability to positively affect the lives of our customers and communities.

I am proud that recent surveys reflect your confidence in our bank and your notable satisfaction with the service you receive at Litchfield Bancorp.  Our employees, those who greet you in our branches and those behind the scenes who make it all happen, are committed to providing the very highest level of service – it is our passion.  We are blessed with a wonderful staff who have served us well through these very difficult times and who will be there for you in the future.

Thank you for your patronage or our bank.   As always I invite your comments about how we can better serve you.  You can reach me at 860-567-9401 or by email.

Sincerely,

Mark E. Macomber
President and CEO
